Cool videos of the Northern Lights. Patrick checks in with DIY enthusiast and MakerBot co-founder, Bre Pettis, to see what’s up with their award winning Replicator 3D printer at CES 2012. I have seen this before and it is awesome. And I want one!!! Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga is like nothing we have ever seen before! Not only does it flip from an Ultrabook to a tablet, but it keeps going and flips even further. Prop it up to watch movies and use the device in a whole new way. PRODUCT: IdeaPad Yoga ![]() This artist's concept shows an overhead view of the orbital position of the planets in systems with multiple transiting planets discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. All the coloured planets have been verified. The planet candidates shown in grey have not yet been verified. Credit: NASA Ames/UC Santa Cruz NASA’s Kepler space telescope mission has confirmed 26 new planets outside our Solar System, all of them orbiting too close to their host stars to sustain life. Scattered across 11 planetary systems, their temperatures would be too hot for survival, as they all circle their stars closer than Venus, the second planet from the Sun, which has a surface temperature of 464 degrees Celsius. But NASA scientists were still pleased with the findings, which nearly double the number of confirmed planets that Kepler has found since 2009. “Prior to the Kepler mission, we knew of perhaps 500 exoplanets across the whole sky,” said Doug Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA headquarters. “Now, in just two years staring at a patch of sky not much bigger than your fist, Kepler has discovered more than 60 planets and more than 2,300 planet candidates,” he added. “This tells us that our galaxy is positively loaded with planets of all sizes and orbits.” The discoveries are described in four different papers in the Astrophysical Journal and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Hexham Investments Trust of Bedford New York, through the Davis, Brown law firm in Des Moines, submitted the winning ticket just minutes before the deadline on December 29th to claim the jackpot that was won in December of 2010. The Iowa Lottery since then has been trying to get information from trust attorney Crawford Shaw, who signed the ticket, as to who the trustees were. Rich says it’s normal procedure for the lottery to determine who the winner was and make sure that person or persons are eligible to get the jackpot. Earlier this week, Iowa lottery officials set a 3pm Friday deadline to get the identity information. They didn’t get any of the information they requested, but instead got a unique offer. January 25th, the Davis, Brown law firm sent a letter to the lottery which proposed that if the Iowa Lottery released the fund to their firm, they would invest 50 percent of the funds in Iowa charities. However, that would be after the firm deducts what it said were $50,000 in their expenses and $5,000 for the trustee, Crawford Shaw. The offer went unanswered. So at 6pm Thursday night, the Iowa Lottery received letters from Davis, Brown and Crawford Shaw saying they were withdrawing the claim. Shaw’s letter says the trust will “take no further action to enforce the claim.” Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich says the unclaimed prize will mean that about $1.6 million will come back to the state of Iowa’s unclaimed prize fund. Rich says that money will be available to win in a future venue. Anyway, after picking up my glasses, I decided that I would take my wife to Applebee’s for lunch. Lunch was good, but towards the last bite of my burger all of a sudden a load crack and I felt something in my mouth, a vibration of sorts. So naturally I finished chewing my food real slow, but there was nothing in my food. After swallowing and then taking a sip of tea I checked my mouth with my tongue and found my second to last molar had split for some reason. It doesn’t hurt and there is no bleeding, but I can feel and see in a mirror the little shard of tooth that is still just barely hanging in there. I’m stuck until Monday when I have an appointment to see the dentist. I do get a somewhat hard to describe painful type feeling if I suck in air through my mouth and over the tooth. But hot and cold don’t bother it and like I said there is no pain. So hopefully the dentist can fix it without pulling, but if it must go then it must go…. I guess. ^MepoM
This is a good one, not much physical action, but a lot of mental action. This is one of those books that would suck for a movie, but is great to read because it gets the gears in your head moving. And Bosch makes a decision on whether to retire or not. The ending is pretty gruesome in this book, but good as usual. As you can tell Mepoinc™ is back online, the other website URL will redirect here, but I’m going to phase it out ans stick with Mepoinc™ as I have had it and been around online for over 14 years now. I also like having total control over my site and be able to post my own videos, photos, etc as I want with out having to worry about space requirements. ^Mepo
A three-member panel has given initial approval to a proposal that would broaden the definition of “justifiable force” for Iowans who believe they face a threat from an attacker and shoot a gun in defense. Representative Matt Windschitl, a Republican from Missouri Valley, says it’s about protecting law-abiding Iowans from frivolous lawsuits. “What we’re trying to address is Iowans’ individual right to protect themselves and their neighbors from any kind of threat or harm without having to face any kind of civil liability,” he says. The three-member House subcommittee that considered the bill held a sort of public hearing yesterday that drew critics of the plan. Polk County Attorney John Sarcone suggested the proposed change would give defense attorneys another tool to try to justify the criminal conduct of gang members or those accused of domestic abuse. “We’d allow people to get off because someone made a comment or looked at somebody the wrong way,” Sarcone said. This same “justifiable force” proposal was introduced last year, too, but never cleared a committee in the House or Senate. There’s no vaccine and no antibiotics for norovirus. “The best thing people can do to stop these outbreaks is, when they have diarrhea and vomiting, stay home,” Quinlisk said. “Don’t go to day care, don’t go to school and don’t go to work. This virus spreads so easily…it can actually go through the air. If someone is sick with vomiting, for example, it can go through the air and infect somebody else.” Reports of norovirus activity in Iowa have increased in recent weeks. Quinlisk said in just the last two weeks, outbreaks have been confirmed in Polk, Johnson, Scott, Black Hawk, Dubuque and Winneshiek Counties.
